Beatrice Smith, 81, known by friends and family as Bea, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020. She is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth L. Smith; her parents, John Dallas Howell and Janet Nations Howell; her son, Kelly Smith; her brother, Howard Lee Howell; and her great granddaughter, Ila Belle Brooks.

Bea is survived by her children, Kenni Lynn ( Steve) Brooks of Sylva and Kyle Lee (Phyllis) Smith of Wagener, S.C.; her brother, Terry Howell of Knoxville, Tenn.; her sister, Oleta Howell Haskett of  East La Porte of Cullowhee; along with four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Bea attended the Qualla School in Jackson County, through the eighth grade, then rode the bus to the Sylva High School, graduating in 1957. She then attended Cooper Business School in Maryville, Tenn. where she perfected her business and secretarial skills. She often mentioned how the school emphasized neatness and appropriate dress for the job.

Bea began working for the Indian Health Services of the federal government in Cherokee under Ms Roper, RN, in the Community/Public Health Division. Both were very organized in caring for patients’ needs, managing specialty clinics in Cherokee and in Snowbird, Eye Care, Obstetrics, Health Cards/checks for policemen, bus drivers and people managing food booths at various gatherings. Bea was a trustworthy worker, with attention to detail and privacy. She kept very detailed family records and knew most of the Indian families on and off the Qualla Boundary. After Ms. Roper retired, Bea continued to work with Ms. Walkingstick, RN, until retiring after some 30 years of government service.

She was a role model for neatness, efficiency, was well-liked and was greatly appreciated, for her “get-er-done” talent. Because she still enjoyed good health and people, she returned to Cherokee Hospital as a Cherokee tribal employee. She was the secretary/clerk for the Physical Therapy Department for a number of years, retired again and joined friends in part-time work in the Cherokee Eye Clinic, for the Optician.

Besides being a daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother, and working, Bea and her husband shared a strong Christian faith and were very active in the Cherokee Baptist Church. Bea was trustworthy in handling monies and serving, especially on committees concerning finance, and the building and property of the Church. She spearheaded several renovations, including installation of the new steeple. They were also active in the Cherokee Cancer Group, helping cancer patients and tehri families, and the Qualla Cooperative Organization. Her husband made beautiful things out of wood, and she helped her husband by applying finishes and the marketing of the items.

Bea will be greatly missed, and we are comforted knowing, as Fred Rogers told children on T.V., “Often when you think you’re at the end of something, you’re at the beginning of something else”. We know she is busy working with our Lord.

The family will have a graveside service for Beatrice Smith on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Thomas Memorial Cemetery. Reverend Percy Cunningham and Reverend Danny Sweet will be officiating. Pallbearers will be Jeff Marcum, Buddy Allison, Brian Brooks, Kobie Brooks, Anthony Smith and Steve Brooks.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to The Building Fund Offering at Cherokee Baptist Church, 812 Tsalagi Rd., Cherokee, NC, ATTENTION: Myra Parker.

If you plan to attend, we ask that you please wear a mask and practice social distancing.

The joy of his life was being around family and friends, sharing his knowledge of the Bible and he would start to testify about living for Christ, the man who died on an ole rugged cross for each and every one of us. John loved to sing gospel songs, oh how he loved to sing. He sang with the Locust family and WhoSoEverWill, sometimes he sang by himself cause he was never bashful. Always friendly to everyone he met.

John will be missed by the family but we were assured his feet was walking on the streets of gold before he took his last two breathes when he lifted his legs and feet in walking motion and took off as if running. We want to thank each and every one who helped us to pray, sang beautiful songs, and brought food, our EMS workers and hospital staff, our fire and rescue, home health, the grave diggers, our Executive office of the EBCI and those who just listened. We want to especially thank our little Suzanne Locust and Courtney George who went above and beyond in caring for Mr. John during his last days here.

Julie Wilkerson Townsend, 59, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2020, with her husband, sister, and Colonel the cat by her side.

Julie was born Julie Ann Wilkerson on April 19, 1961 to Joe and Sally Wilkerson in Knoxville, Tenn.  She had a lifelong love of books, setting a record for the most books read in the second grade at West Hills Elementary School. Her education, prior to college, started at The Little Red School House and continued on to West Hills Elementary, Bearden Junior High School, and Bearden High School where she was a graduating member of the class of 1978.  She had careers in both sales and university administration before finishing her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Native American Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1997.

After the completion of her educational degree, she went to work for the Great Smoky Mountains Association, and soon after she became an Interpretive Park Ranger for the National Park Service.  While living in Bryson City during her 20 years of teaching in the western North Carolina region, she connected with and befriended many hundreds of students from kindergarten through advanced adult education.  However, she found her greatest joy in serving as a substitute teacher for the Cherokee Central Schools System, grades K – 12.  She loved her Cherokee students, who returned her affections by shouting greetings of “Ranger Julie, Ranger Julie!”  Students would often remind her of lessons she taught them, proud to show her that they still remembered them.  She loved seeing so many of her students mature from Kindergarten through various grades, with some graduating college and becoming parents themselves.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Sally Wilkerson; her grandparents, Floyd and Eleanor Dailey and Harvey and Pearl Wilkerson; her father-in-law Russell Lowell Townsend; as well as other loved family members.  She is survived by her beloved husband of 22 years, Russell Townsend of Tulsa, Okla.; Colonel the cat of East Deep Creek; sister, Susan Wilkerson; and brother, John (Pennye) Wilkerson Of Knoxville, Tenn.; her best friend of over 50 years, Danya Cope; sister-in-law, Amy (David) Miller of Elk City, Okla.; two nephews and a niece whom she dearly loved; and numerous extended family members and other close friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those willing to do so, make a donation to a charity of your choice.  Funeral arrangements are still be made, and will soon be announced through various media sources as well as by Crisp Funeral Home of Bryson City.
