OBITUARY: Danny Lane Swayney

Danny Lane Swayney, 43, of Cherokee, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020. He was preceded in death by his brother, Brian Eugen Swayney, and his sister, Corene Swayney. In addition, he will be greeted in the afterlife by his uncles, Darren Swayney and Thurmon (aka Chunky) Swayney; and his aunt, Betty Jean Swayney. 

Danny is survived by his wife, Loretta Gregory as well as his father, Johnny E. Swayney, and his mother, Dolores Lynette Shell. In addition, he leaves behind his children, Dani Raelen, Devin Eugene, Alana and Ariel, all of Cherokee; his brothers, Sam (Sherrene) Swayney, Eddie Swayney, John Shell, Rocky Frank, Windall Toineeta; his sisters, Laurie Swayney, Misty Postell, Fashia Teesateskie, Libby Swayney, Stacy Lindsay, and Jill Swayney; and a special sister, Lisa Mathis. Also surviving Danny are his uncles, Bill Swayney, Dan Swayney, Bruce Swayney, Perry Shell; and his aunts, Patricia Swayney and Bobby Swayney; as well as the mother of his older children, Joni Larch-Locust. 

The family will have a graveside service for Danny on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 2 p.m. at the Johnny H. Swayney Cemetery on Swayney Road in the Big Cove Community. Pastor Tim James will be officiating. Pallbearers will be Eric Swayney, Carey Swayney, Justin Swayney, Darren Swayney, Jeremy Swayney, and Hunter Swayney.

OBITUARY: Joseph “Joe” William Lomas

Joseph “Joe” William Lomas, 25, of Cherokee, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Aug. 28, 2020. He is preceded in death by his father, Jorge Miguel Lomas; his maternal grandparents, William and Leona Bird; his uncle, John Smoker; his aunt, Sara Smoker; his maternal grandfather, Richard Walkingstick; and his best friend, Michael Montelongo.

He is survived by his mother, Reva (Nehi) Toineeta; his companion, Svnoyi Crowe; and his beloved children – sons, Samuel Lomas and Aeson Lomas; daughter, Sdesi Lomas; stepchildren, Tseque Jackson, Cubby Jackson, and Adaneti Durham. In addition, he is survived by his brothers, Jorge (Autumn) Lomas, Jaime (Emma) Garcia; his nephew, Brayden Lomas; his aunts, Rebecca Paz-Chalacha and Thelma Bird; his grandmother, Stacy Rogers; and his cousins, Shakayla Smother and Sabrina Smoker.

The Family will have visitation for Joe Lomas on Tuesday, Sept. 1 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Long House Funeral Home. Interment will be at Long Family Cemetery on Long Branch in Cherokee with Pastor Greg Morgan Officiating. Pallbearers will be Tavi Rivera, Raymond Taylor, Cain Oocumma, Cleto Montelongo, Gavin Kalonaheskie, Galanvdi Crowe, and Desmond Ellington.

OBITUARY: Albert George Sr. “Dinker”

Albert George Sr., “Dinker”, 60, went to his meet his Lord Savior on Monday, Sept. 7, 2020 peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones. Dinker will be welcomed at the Heavenly gates by his parents, brothers, and a sister.

Dinker is survived by his wife of 42 years, Desiree George. He also leaves behind to carry on his memories his children, Amanda Lynn George (partner Lewis) and her children; daughter, Destini (partner Kenny Griffin) and their two children, Kolin and Kyrie; daughter, Megan Paugh and her son, Kaius; son, Albert Clayton George Jr. and his wife, Kayla along with their children Braydon and Braylin; John Cameron (partner Rachel) and their children – Shawn, Gabrielle, Laila, Desmond, Xavier, Jaydan, and Meli Joy. Also surviving Dinker are his brothers, Herbert George and JC George.

Dinker had friends all over the place, from Ohio to Florida, and everywhere in between. He loved making friends from all walks of life. A member of the Old Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Dinker especially loved his church and his church family. He will be remembered for his love of fishing and fast pitch softball.

The family will have a Graveside Service for Dinker at the George Family Cemetery on Quail Rd at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8 with Reverend Bear Lambert officiating.

Pallbearers will be among family and friends.

OBITUARY: Vaughn F. Smith

Vaughn F. Smith, 74, of Cherokee, passed away after an extended illness on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2020. He is preceded in death by his parents, James Harvey Smith Sr. and Helen Bradley Smith.

Vaughn is survived by his daughters, Janice Wilnoty, Sandra Smith, Frances Smith, and Deborah Smith, as well as by their mother, Malinda Mahan. He also leaves behind one sister, Carol Welch, as well as her daughter, his niece, Jaime Welch. Vaughn loved being a grandpa and will miss his grandchildren, Ashford Smith, Ashley Murphy and Thomas Wilnoty, Alissa Smith, Christian Smith, Miranda Smith, Damian Catolster, Brianna Smith, Kiri Hill, Haley Cooper, Caedance Smith, Makenzie Rattler; as well as his nine great grandchildren.

Vaughn was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church of Big Cove. He will be remembered as a brilliant man, who knew more about the outdoors than anyone his children had ever met. He found great joy in sharing his knowledge of the outdoors as well as Cherokee culture and how to live off the land. He enjoyed volunteering in his community, whether it was donating to people with food or in other ways. He would often collect various plants and greens from the mountains and teach how it could be eaten or used for medicinal purposes.  Vaughn loved horseshoes, jack snaps and card games. He was unbeatable at Setback. One of his daughter’s most treasured memories of their dad will be of him doing cannonballs of the big rock at The Deep Hole in his younger days.

The family will be having visitation for Vaughn F. Smith on Thursday, Sept. 10 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Pentecostal Holiness Church in the Big Cove Community. Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 11 at 11 a.m.  with Reverend James “Bo” Parris officiating as well as Joe Wolfe and Reverend Anne French to share words and prayers with those gathered. Vaughn will be taken to the Smith Family Cemetery on Wally Welch Rd. after service for interment. Pall bearers will be among family and friends.

OBITUARY: Roy Bailey

Roy Bailey, 80, of the Stecoah Community, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2020 at his residence.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Vergie Bailey.

Roy is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Frankie Farr Bailey; his children Kim Newman (Kurtis) of Almond, and Bill Bailey (Melinda) of Robbinsville; his loving and devoted sister in law, Mary Jo Reader, who was his caregiver for many years, but especially the last 10 months; his grandchildren, Josh and John Bailey, Karla Currie, Katie Gomez, and Kyle and Chris Norcross; and his great grandchildren, Kiley, Lyla, Tucker, Faith, Lilly, Lela, and Wesley Roy.  Roy always said that a very special friend, Kelly Brock Johnson, saved his life when he had his heart attack; she checked on him regularly in his last days and he loved her dearly.

Roy started a boat business in the back yard in 1977.  By 1984, the backyard boat business had moved to Bryson City and was known as Smoky Mountain Lakes Marine for the next 24 years.  The business was sold in 2008.

He was a board member of the N.C. Wildlife Commission and worked to establish the boat dock at Lemmon’s Branch.  He loved to fish in tournaments and fished the Jerry Ryne, FLW, Bass Masters, Fishers of Men, Heartland Series, David Hicks Tuesday Night Tournaments on Fontana Lake.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 at Stecoah Baptist Church.  The Reverends Daniel Stewart and Mike Teem will officiate.  Burial will follow the service at the Jenkins Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. until  2 p.m. prior to the service.

Roy was a simple man and loved the outdoors so he family requests that in his memory that anyone wishing to attend please dress casually and if you have fishing attire, please wear it.

OBITUARY: Michael D. Reed

Michael Dale Wayne Reed, 61, of Cherokee, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2020.  The son of the late Wilson and Frances Reed, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Wilson Reed and Allen Huey Reed.

Michael is survived by his brothers, Fredrick (Janice)Reed, Robert (Marie) Reed; sisters, Bonnie Reed and Florence Reed. In addition to his siblings, Michael leaves behind his children, David Reed, Brooklyn Reed, Michael Reed Jr., Joseph Reed, and Cheyann Reed; along with nieces and nephews, Janet (Mark) McCafe, Addie Reed, Terri ( Doug) Bohanan, Fredrick (Tisha) Reed, Michael Hunter Reed, Kristina Reed, Tammy Lee Reed, Rebecca Reed, Brandon Sparks, and Maddox Reed.

The family is having visitation for Michael Dale Wayne Reed at the family home at 647 Mink Branch Rd.  Michael will lie in repose till his funeral service on Friday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. Pastor Ben Reed will be officiating. Michael will be interred at the Reed Cemetery on Mink Branch following the service. Pallbearers will be among family and friends.

OBITUARY: Lorraine (Deb) Conseen

Lorraine (Deb) Conseen, 55, of Cherokee, went home to be with the Lord Friday, Sept. 11, 2020. A native of Cherokee, she was the daughter of H.J. Bradley and his wife Flora of Cherokee, and the late Maggie Cucumber. In addition to her mother, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Conseen and a brother, Johnny Bradley.

Deb enjoyed playing Bingo, going to the Casino, fishing and playing the scratch off tickets. She also loved tending to her yard and flowers, and making sure her children, grandchildren, and dogs were spoiled. She also loved watching cartoons. Deb was a well-known and caring person who had an infectious smile. She could light up a room as soon as she walked in. She opened up her home to anyone never turning anyone away. She loved her children and grandchildren more than anything devoting everything to them. Anyone who met her will always remember her and we have never heard anything negative about her. She has many family and friends that will miss her dearly as she touched all of their hearts.

She is survived by three children, Shana Hornbuckle, Carrie Wade and husband Nick, and Steven Long and wife Frances all of Cherokee; grandchildren, Ely, Kaella, Abreana, Kenleigh, and Shane Hornbuckle all of the home, Soloman West, Alena Wade, Amira Wade, Xander, and Link Long all of Cherokee; five siblings, Pearl Dry of Oklahoma, Cinda Porter of Oklahoma, Rinda Bradley of Arizona, Gerald Bradley of Cherokee, and Eddie Bradley of Cherokee.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15 at Crisp Funeral Home Chapel. Revs. Scott Chekelelee and Noah Crowe will officiate with burial in Littlejohn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Funeral Home.

OBITUARY: Johnny Michael McCarter

Johnny Michael McCarter, age 85 of Barnesville, Ga. passed away at home Thursday, Sept. 10, 2020.

John was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He graduated from Emory Law School and practiced law in Georgia over 50 years. He loved fishing and camping in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina.

John is survived by his wife, ZiZi; daughter, Jennifer; son, Jay; and two grandchildren, Lauren and Butler.

OBITUARY: Jody Mark Davis

Jody Mark Davis, 47 of Cherokee, never met a person he didn’t like, and everyone who met him loved him.  He made a lasting impact on all those whose paths crossed his, and on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2020, surrounded by family and friends, he crossed his final path to join those who went before him.

Jody was born to Pete Davis and Delores Browning Davis on Jan. 9, 1973.  He was an avid video gamer and quite the basketball player during his high school days.  Jody was a member of the 1990-91 Braves basketball team that took all of Cherokee on a wild ride to the NCHSAA 1A state championship game.  He graduated from Cherokee High School in 1991, and he began a lifelong career in the gaming industry shortly thereafter.

Jody was known for his kindness and his humor as his friends and co-workers are quick to point out.  His disposition and kind nature were very much like that of his beloved mother.  He loved Duke basketball, the Chicago Bears, baseball, his fur pals, and his beautiful children.

Jody is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Denning Rochester; special uncle and aunt, Dude and Wilma Davis; and close friends, Dee Owle, Jamy Jenks, and Barry Fish.  He is survived by his wife, Stephanie; children, Rayna, Maiya, Evan, and Cole; granddaughter, Raylyn; and brother, Jeff.  He also leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends who became family.

The immediate family will be holding a small, private graveside service.

OBITUARY: Perry Dean Sequoyah

He was born in Cherokee to the late Gilbert Smith and Jesse Kay Sequoyah. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Allen Boyd Crowe and Denny Smith as well as a special nephew, Chrismon Todd Smith. 

Perry is survived by his sons, River (Mariah) Sequoyah and Houston (Chanel) Hornbuckle; along with his brothers, Barry (Barb) Robie, Gilbert Biello; his sisters, Kim Sequoyah and Jackie (Montie) Tesky; as well as his aunt, Elnora Bird. 

Perry leaves behind eight grandchildren in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. 

Perry loved to travel. A jack of all trades, he was always on the move. Perry will be remembered as a motorcycle enthusiast that rode every chance he got. He loved spending time with family. Perry’s boys will always treasure the memory of first meeting him and all his funny antics. They love to share stories of laughter about his wild adventures. Perry was full of life and will be sadly missed by the people who knew and loved him.  

The family will be having a visitation for Perry D Sequoyah on Saturday, Sept. 19 beginning at 11 a.m. with funeral service starting at 12 p.m.

OBITUARY: T.J. Holland

T.J. Holland, 44, of Robbinsville, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Sept. 12, 2020 at his residence.

He was the son of Tommy and Patricia Long Holland of Robbinsville.  He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ned and Shirley Massey Long and his paternal grandfather, Rev. Lennox Hedrick.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his loving wife, Caroline Peay Holland; his son, Andrew Jonathan Holland of Robbinsville; his daughter, Emma Kate Harrison of Robbinsville; his brother, John David Holland of Robbinsville; his aunts, Brenda Long-Norville (Todd), and Donna Brown (Jody), all of Robbinsville; his uncles, Ned Long (Robin), and Johnny Long, all of Robbinsville; his paternal grandmother, Sue Hedrick of Robbinsville; and his mother-in-law, Kathy Everette of Madison.  T.J. also leaves many nephews, cousins, family members, friends, co-workers, and tribal members who will cherish his memory.

T.J. was a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) where he worked as the Cultural Resources Supervisor/Junaluska Museum Manager.  As a valued member of his Tribe, he served the EBCI in many capacities including serving on the Tribal and Medical Institutional Review Boards, the Tribal Historic Properties and Preservation Committee, the N.C. Trail of Tears Association, the WCU Center for Native Health, the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, the WCU Cherokee Studies Program, Snowbird Fading Voices Committee and he worked with the Smithsonian Institute regarding Cherokee History, along with serving in other various roles and activities.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 16 at Robbinsville First Baptist Church, of which he was a member.  Reverend Ben Thacker officiated with a Eulogy by Jeff Marley.   Burial followed at New Hope Baptist Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in T.J.’s memory to benefit the Junaluska Museum.  Those donations may be mailed to the Robbinsville Branch of First Citizens Bank, 248 Rodney Orr Bypass, Robbinsville, NC 28771, or they can be dropped off at any First Citizens Branch by referencing the memorial fund for T.J. Holland for the Junaluska Museum.

OBITUARY: Kimberly Dawn Crowe

It is with saddened hearts that the family of Kimberly Dawn Crowe, 36, announces her passing on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020. Kimberly, lovingly known as Kimbo by her friends and family, is preceded in death by her brother, Chino West; her uncle, Hosea West; grandmother, Lawanda Jackson; grandfather, Jimmy West; and her brother-in-law, Aaron Gloyne.

Kimberly is survived by her parents – father, Jeffrey (Regina) Crowe; her mother, Kathy West; as well as her children, Jeffrey Bradley and Kay’D Bradley. In addition, she leaves behind her sisters, Heather (Andy) Century and Hilda Crowe; along with several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Kimberly was always so full of life. She will be remembered for being an all-around good person and willing to stand up for anybody. One of her mother’s fondest memories of Kimbo is of the time when she was younger and had a big, fat red hen. One day a chicken hawk swooped down, picked up her hen and carried it away. Kimberly chased after that chicken hawk, throwing rocks at it until it dropped her hen. She came home with a big smile and her big, fat, red hen in her arms. Kimberly will be remembered as someone who never gave up on what she loved. She loved to spend time with her children as well as with her friends and family. Her infectious smile and laughter will be missed by those who knew her.

The family will have visitation for Kimberly Dawn Crowe on Monday, Sept. 21 at Long House Funeral Home from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. with Funeral Service to follow. Pastor James “Bo” Parris will be officiating. If you plan to attend, please wear a mask and follow social distancing guidelines.

OBITUARY: Geraldean Elizabeth (Ward) Webb

Geraldean Elizabeth (Ward) Webb, 66, of the Cooper’s Creek community in Bryson City, received her glorified body Sunday, Sept. 20, 2020. She was born on Oct. 2, 1953 to the late David Ellis Ward and Mary Alma (Green) Ward.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Carnes.

Geraldean is survived by her husband of 48 years, Delbert Webb; a son, Jason Webb (Amanda); a daughter, Jennifer Hunt (Justin); sister, Wanda Dills (Leonard); brother, John Ward (Amy); sister, Jo Ann Austin (Steve); brother-in-law, Cance Carnes (Bonnie); grandsons, Zack Webb, Kadin Webb, Dallas Hunt, and Ellis Webb; one granddaughter, Makayla Hunt; and numerous nieces and nephews of whom she deeply loved.

She was a member of Hyatt’s Chapel Baptist Church.  Her passion in this life was her family.  Being a wife, mother, and Mamaw were her greatest accomplishments.  Geraldean loved the Lord and wanted everyone to know that.  Geraldean spent many years working in the optometry offices of Dr. Don Ramsey and Dr. Coy Brown, where she befriended everyone that walked through the doors.  She spent all of her 66 years putting everyone before herself.  She never met a stranger and wanted to make sure that everyone was taken care of.  No matter if it was prayer, a meal, a place to lay your head, or just a good talking to, you could always get it at Mamaw’s!

The family would like to invite everyone that would like to come Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 10 a.m. for visitation and 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Crisp’s Funeral Home for Geraldean’s celebration of life.  Her son-in-law Justin Hunt will be officiating.  Pallbearers will be Zack Webb, Kadin Webb, Harold Connor, Chris Rivardo, Harry Wood, and Josh Carnes. Burial will follow at Thomas Chapel Cemetery.

The family would like to say thank you to Dr. Steven Queen, the staff at Harris Regional Hospital, Swain County EMS, and Rock Creek Baptist Church for their help during this time.  Friends and family, thank you for all of your prayers during this time.

OBITUARY: William Paul Owle “Poppy”

William Paul Owle “Poppy”, 86, of Cherokee, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2020.  He was born in Swain County on Dec. 20, 1933, to the late Dewitt and Eva Owle.  William worked as a logger and truck driver throughout his life.  He served his country in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force in the medical corps. He was an excellent bear hunter, and also loved to fish and hunt deer. He was of the Baptist faith and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend.  He will be missed by all of those that knew him.

Mr. Owle is survived by four daughters, Paulette Shoaf, Arlene Smith (Bill), Michelle Smith (Robert), and Tonuia Conner (Danny); Whitney Lowe, Goyia Swanson, and Margaret Moser, who he considered daughters; a special niece, Aneva Turtle Hagberg, that he treated like a daughter; 10 grandchildren, April Ross (Sean), Britney Fuller (Chris), Sergeant Wesley Long (Valerie), Devan Rei Smith, Shasta Nacole Owle, Alexzaya, Tristin, Saylor Haynie, Emaliyah Wolfe, and Ares Leroy Paul; six great grandchildren, Staff Sergeant Austin Joe Padilla, Vivian Layne Ross, Jayla Ann Fuller, Alaya Mackenzie Fuller, McKinley Ann Long, and Shaylee Jade Fuller; one sister, Francis Arneach; a very special friend, Doc Hagberg; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Mary Ann Cochran Owle.  He is also preceded by one son, Randy Owle, three brothers, and four sisters.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Sept. 20 in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home with Reverend Danny Byers officiating.  Burial followed at Birdtown Cemetery with Military Honors.  Pallbearers were Brian Waldroop, Bill Waldroop, Chris Waldroop, Ray Long, Chris Fuller, and Cain Arch.  Curtis Arneach, Snapper Turtle, Shane Owle, and Jody Haynie served as honorary pallbearers.

OBITUARY: James “Bo” Parris

James “Bo” Parris, of the Big Cove community in Cherokee, walked through Heaven’s Gates on Monday, Sept. 21, 2020. Bo was born in Tryon, Ga. on Jan. 8, 1935.

Bo was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Parris, his father, Scott Parris; his mother, Edna Hamilton Parris;  and his aunt and uncle Sadd and Stella Dalton in Tryon, Ga.

Brother Parris was the pastor of  Big Cove Baptist Church for 61 years. He was fluent in reading, writing, and speaking the Cherokee Language. Bo, along with Bros. Gil Breedlove and Raymond Johnson, completed a hymnbook, containing over 200 songs in the Cherokee Language.

Bo retired from the U.S. Postal Service with over 35 years of service. Over the years he served the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians on the Law and Order Committee and School Board. Bo was a graduate of Carson Newman College. On May 2, 1974, he was granted “Honorary Member” of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. He also served in the U.S. Marines.

At last count Bo had preached over 1,000 funerals. He loved the Lord and he loved to witness to others about Christ. He only missed Church on Sunday when he was in the hospital and when churches were mandated to close. He enjoyed reading every day and has a library full of Christian books. Bo firmly believed in supporting missionaries both domestic and internationally. Bo also loved stickball he played with Big Cove Stickball Team in his younger days. He enjoyed watching the men play.

In addition, when he was able, he visited the nursing homes and hospital every day and often acknowledged the nurses, especially those in inpatient: Jennifer, Tammy, and Dana. Every week or so he would get what he called “care package” and take to the inpatient nurses.

His love and dedication for Indian people is what made him happy. Regardless of the time of day or night, when he was able, he would get up and go to the hospital when called. He is the most kind, loving, forgiving, God-fearing man who wanted all others to accept Christ.

Bo is survived by two daughters, Jamie Tranter of Cherokee and Joanne Parris of Phoenix, Ariz. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Steven, Susie, Tabitha, Jr, Ryan, and Kayla; great grandchildren, Alaia, Lexi, Ayla, Nevaeh, Caedance, Jayden, and Anthony, Hunter and Edger and Annee, Awee and Kaiden; and one great great grandchild, Zavian.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 at Big Cove Baptist Church. Revs. Raymond Johnson and Gil Breedlove will officiate. Burial will be in the West Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Steve Youngdeer American Legion Post 143.

Bo will be taken to the church at 5 p.m. Friday by Crisp Funeral Home to await the hour of service.

Pallbearers will be members of the Big Cove Stickball Team.

Face Coverings will be required at the service and visitation.

OBITUARY: Annie Bell Welch

Annie Belle Welch, 72, of Robbinsville, passed away, Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020 at Graham Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

She was a native of Graham County and the daughter of the late Henry and Bessie Smoker Jumper.  She is survived by her husband, Joel Welch; daughter, Kristie Ramirez of Franklin; sons, Henry David Welch, B.J. Welch both of Robbinsville, Glenn Elliott Welch of Cherokee; sisters, Christine Campbell and Nora French.  She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 at Little Snowbird Baptist Church.  The Reverend Noah Crowe will officiate.  Burial will follow the service at the Hickory Gap Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. till 2 p.m. Saturday at Little Snowbird Baptist Church prior to the service.

OBITUARY: Walter “Juke” Bradley Jr.

Walter Andrew Bradley Jr., 34, of Cherokee, passed away on Friday, Oct. 2, 2020. Known by his family and friends as Juke, Walter is preceded in death by his father, Walter Andrew Bradley Sr., as well as his grandparents, Wally and Jessan Watty, Henry and Helen Bradley. 

Juke is survived by his mother, Wendy Sue Bradley; his brothers, Andrew Bradley, Calvin Bradley, and Roland Bradley. In addition, he leaves behind his aunts, Carol Bradley Long, Loretta Bradley, Jean Bradley, and Geneva Watty; a great aunt, Eva Reed; one uncle, Robert Lee Reed; a special cousin, Manual Watty Jr. “ Weezer”; one niece and one nephew, as well as numerous cousins and friends. 

Juke was a great guy with a great sense of humor. He worked for a number of years at Forestry where he was known for always being the first to volunteer for a job but always had a joke to throw in when he could. Most recently, Juke worked as a Carpenter with the Cherokee Boy’s Club. Juke loved to be outdoors, whether it was just walking around, fishing or harvesting seasonal crops in the mountains. He talked to everyone and would claim his cousins with laughter. Juke was a big hearted person who would not hesitate to give you the shirt off his back. He will be missed for his kind nature. If you knew him, you knew that he was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. 

Per his wishes, Juke was cremated. He didn’t want a big fuss about him, all he wanted  was his family to come together for a meal and share stories of  his love and laughter. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in his name to the Cherokee Youth Center.

OBITUARY: George David Martin Sr.

George David Martin Sr., 71, of Cherokee, passed away peacefully at his home after battling an extended illness. He is preceded in death by his father, Arthur Hubbard Sr.; his mother, Sarah Jane Martin; his son, David Lee Martin; his brothers: Thomas Paul Martin, Dallas Martin and Bruce Martin Sr.; his nephew, Pete Martin; and his niece, Connie Martin Detlefsen. 

George is survived by his wife, Lilian Plummer Martin; as well as his children: Joanna Jane Martin, George David Martin Jr., Jordan Thomas Green and Leah Danielle Green; and his eight grandchildren. In addition, he leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

George enjoyed doing Native Arts and Crafts as well as traveling and dancing at pow wows. He was an avid story teller. He shared his story of recovery to anyone who needed to talk at the pow wows and all over the nation. He was a true character. 

The family will be having visitation for George David Martin Sr., on Thursday, Oct. 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Long House Funeral Home. A short graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Pete’s Resting Place Cemetery in the Soco Community. Matthew Tooni will be officiating. Pallbearers will be among family and friends. We ask that all who plan to attend please follow all COVID-19 Guidelines and wear a mask.

OBITUARY: Danielle Brady

Danielle Brady, born Jan. 21, 1986 passed away Oct. 6, 2020. She was a wonderful beautiful daughter, sister, and the best mom.

She was preceded in death on her mother’s side by her grandma, Golinda Lambert; grandpa, David Lambert; aunts, Mary (Bell), Lillian (Lill); uncles, Rob, Adam, Crock, and Chuck; on her father’s side, grandma, Mattie Brady; grandpa, Sam Brady; aunts, Jessie, Julie; and uncle, Sam Brady Jr.

She is survived by two beautiful children, Kalina and Junior. She is also survived by parents, Susanne Brady and Daniel Brady; four wonderful brothers, Bobby, David, Dusty, and Steven Brady; numerous nieces and nephews. She loved them all and is survived by many many friends, wonderful cousins, Aunts and uncles.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Oct. 10 in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home.

OBITUARY: Amy Smoker

Amy Smoker, 91, a Cherokee Language fluent speaker of the Snowbird Community in Robbinsville, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2020 at The Elizabeth House in Hendersonville.

Ms. Amy is the daughter of the late Jesse Teesateskie and Polly Catt Bird Teesateskie.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Amy is preceded in death by her late husband, Jack Coburn Smoker; brothers, Joe Teesateskie, William Teesateskie, Joseph Teesateskie, Lee Teesateskie, and Soloman Bird; sisters, Lillian Ledford, Sarah Smoker, Dinah Wachacha, Suzanne Goodson and Rebecca Bird Teesateskie; granddaughters, Sally-Jo Anderson, Angela Teesateskie, and Alanna Smoker; great grandson, Ryalee Adam Welch; special childhood friend, Abraham Teesateskie; and special friends, Jack and Rosie Ross, Jack and Betty Kingfisher, and Bill Drywater, all of Tahlequah Oklah., Sampson  and Mina Leach of Locust Grove, Okla. and many more from all over.

Ms. Amy is survived by her children, Richard Smoker, Rachel Smoker, Myrtle Smoker, Maybelle Welch (Alfred), Tony Smoker, Roger Smoker (Dawn), and Irene Smoker-Jackson (Howard), all of Robbinsville; and Lane Smoker (Bessie) of Cherokee.

Ms. Amy also leaves behind 21 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, 32 great-great-grandchildren;  many nieces and nephews and many special friends from all over.

Ms. Amy was the last monolingual Cherokee language speaking member of the Snowbird Community. She was a proud member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians where she played a key role in preserving the history and traditions of the Snowbird Community. Ms. Amy was well known for her hominy, chestnut bread, beanbread, and frybread making skills. She enjoyed holidays and spending time with her family. She was known all over and also enjoyed visiting family and friends in Oklahoma.

Although she spoke very few words, her affectious smile spoke for her.

Ms Amy’s 12 Grandsons will be the pallbearers.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 2020 at the Little Snowbird Playground.  Reverends Ernie Stiles, Foreman Bradley, and Coy Adams will officiate.  The family will receive friends in a drive-by format at the playground from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday prior to the service.  The family requests that those attending the services remain in their vehicles.  For those wishing to attend the committal services at the Smoker Cemetery, face coverings are mandatory. The burial site is near Lane Smokers residence at 1347 Little Snowbird Rd, Robbinsville.
