OBITUARY: Jackie Lee Rattler

Jackie Lee Rattler, 61, of the Birdtown Community, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020. A native of Cherokee, he was the son of Elsie Wolfe Rattler of Cherokee and the late Leroy Rattler. He was a member of the Cherokee Bass Club.

Jackie was an avid outdoorsman.  He loved fishing, hunting, and riding his Harley.  He was the grill master for all his family and friends.  He was a generous soul who adored children and always had a house full of family and friends.  He always had kind words and a smile for all.

Jackie was preceded in death by two sisters, Linda Lee and Polly Ann Rattler; brother, Mickie Rattler; nieces, Jada Lee, Justina and Veronica Rattler; nephews, Little Mickie, Hawk, and Zebo Rattler; paternal grandparents, Morgan and Bertha Rattler; and maternal grandparents, Lula and Jacob Wolfe.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sons, Hunter and McKenzie Rattler; daughters, Kaila Cucumber and Caedance Smith; special daughters, Rae Taylor, Jess Gonzalez, Kierstan Cucumber; grandson, Kaden Cucumber; special niece, Marlene Queen; brothers, Jody, Tim, Harold, Sammy and Kari Rattler; aunts, Lucille Wolfe and Laura Blankenship; uncle, Bill Wolfe; and countless nieces, nephews and extended family.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 18 in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. Joe Wolfe officiated.  A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rattler Mountain Cemetery.

OBITUARY: Maxine Maude Smith

The family of Maxine Maude Smith, 89, of Cherokee, is grieved to announce her passing on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020. She is the daughter of the late Russell Smith and the Late Elizabeth “Lizzie” French Smith.

In addition to her parents, Maxine is preceded in death by her brothers, Manuel Smith, Samuel Smith; her sisters, Shirlene Smith, Dyxye Parker and Mary Smith McCoy; a foster sister, Lucy McLaughlin; her brother-in-law, Jerome Parker; a sister-in-law, Nancy Smith; her nephew, Joey Parker; and a great nephew, Bill Smith.

She is survived by her sister and guardian, Katherine Smith; her brother, Kenneth “Feet” Smith; a sister-in-law, Joyce Hannah Smith; her niece/caregiver, Lizzie (German) Bernal; nieces and nephews, Vikki Smith, Terry Smith, Myra Cloer(Mike), Kym Parker, Lisa Penick (Charles), Deidra Fowler, Eddie Smith (Nellie), Rick McCoy, and Pam Smith; and great nieces and nephews, Samantha Smith (Jamie), Tabitha Smith (Tony), Amanda Moore (Matt), Sam Wolfe (Samantha), Keisha Lambert (Steven), Malaciah Taylor, Rachel Taylor (John), Colby Yañez (Justice), Omar Yañez, Kristina Cloer, Sidnie Yañez, Cody Smith, Brandi Smith, Sydney Bird, and Eli McCoy. In addition, she leaves behind 24 great great nieces and nephews as well as an extended family of cousins and loved ones.

Maxine was born mentally-handicapped and wasn’t expected to live at birth yet lived 89 full year. Maxine didn’t let her disabilities keep her from doing things. She loved to wash dishes, fold clothes, go to church, go to “school”(VOC) and watch it snow until she was no longer able to due to blindness in recent years. She loved to be asked to pray before meals and she always prayed before going to bed. Her family will miss her terribly and will always remember her singing, laughing, and when she was mad because she would give you a good cussing but most of all we will miss her calling everyone “Chicka”.

Maxine lived a long happy life that was cut short by an evil beast called COVID-19 that kept her family from being there with her In her final days. Her family would like to ask everyone to please take this virus seriously. Most times people don’t realize they have it until it’s too late and they have already infected others.

The family will have graveside services for  Maxine on Sunday, Nov. 22 starting at 2 p.m. at Russell Smith Family Cemetery at 5751 Wolfetown Rd., Cherokee, NC. Reverend Dan Conseen will be officiating, with pallbearers from among family.

OBITUARY: Michael Dwight Tiger

Mike Tiger, 70, continued his journey on Friday, Nov. 20, 2020 surrounded by his loving family following a period of declining health while at Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva. Mike was an enrolled member of the Seminole Tribe of Florida. 

He was born March 7, 1950 to his late Seminole Father, Howard Tiger and his  late Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians mother, Winifred Sneed Tiger.  He is also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Cam and Minda Bradley Sneed of Cherokee;  his paternal grandmother, Ada Tiger of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, Snake Clan; as well as his two brothers, Clyde Tiger and Vernon Tiger. 

Mike is survived by his wife of 46 years, Judy Gloyne Tiger and his four children, Ernest Dwight Tiger, Russilla Bree Tige, Catcuce Veron (Katie) Tiger, and Katie Tiger Smith (Elijah). He also leaves behind six grandchildren, Ali Skye, Mikah Day, Lil Catcuce, Shaligugi, and Ani Unole. In addition, he is survived by his loving sister, Ruscilla Tiger of the Hollywood Reservation. He is also survived by his first cousin, who was more like a brother to him, Moses “BigShot” Jumper. 

Mike leaves behind many friends, family, co-workers as well as his childhood friend, Dan Miller, who Mike considered as a brother. He also leaves behind many, may caring members of the Sneed Family in Cherokee. 

Mike grew up on the Dania-Hollywood Reservation in Broward County, Hollywood, Fla. He was very proud of his Seminole Tribe of Florida and Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian Heritage. Mike grew up living in a “chickee” until his father moved the family into a house on the Hollywood Reservation.  As a young man, Mike was an outstanding athlete at McArthur High School. Together with four other Seminole Teammates: Joe Osceola, Moses Jumper, Max Osceola, and Moses Osceola; these Seminole Players were dubbed “The Fearsome Five”. They were instrumental in helping to win the 1967 District Football Championship. Mike went on to attend The Tampa University to play football. Mike joined the National Guard and served from 1969-74.

 

Mike began his long career in 1971 at the age of 21 when he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, Inc.  He is the youngest person to hold public office of the Seminole Tribe. In 1973, he came to work full time for the Seminole Tribe as the Human Resources director. Eventually, he was promoted to executive administrator of the Seminole Tribe. In 1982, Mike moved his family to Nashville, Tenn. to work for Indian Health Services (IHS). The IHS Nashville Office manages all the resource s for providing health services to American Indians and Urban Organization funding for American Indians living from Texas to Maine to as far south as Florida. 

Over the next 22 years, Mike worked in many different positions with Indian Health Services, from executive officer to deputy director. The latter 10 years of his time with Indian Health Services, he served as area director. Mike retired from Indian Health Services in 2004 after 22 years of service and went home to Florida to work for the Seminole Tribe as the tribal treasurer.  Along Mike’s journey, he made many friendships through his love of hunting and fishing. He also left a lasting impression from his enjoyment of coaching, sports and his professional career. 

His family will be holding a Memorial Service for Mike Tiger at Cherokee Baptist Church on Monday, Nov. 23. They will be accepting condolences and visitations from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. at which time his daughter, Katie, will begin his Eulogy. After his eulogy, they would like to invite friends and family members to speak and share beloved memories of Mike. Then there will be a closing prayer. 

Mike will be interred at the First Seminole Baptist Church in Hollywood, Fla. next to his family home. 

The family has requested that no flowers be sent for the Memorial Service; those so inclined may make a donation in Mike’s Memory to the Cherokee Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 395, Cherokee, NC 28719.

OBITUARY: Glen H. Thomas

Glen H. Thomas, 1940-2020, went home peacefully, Thursday evening, Nov. 26, 2020 to be with his Lord and Savior. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Lawton and Bertha Thomas.

Glen is survived by his wife, Arlena Thomas; his daughter, Lynn Thomas (Bo) and his sister, Shirley Sutton (Gene); stepsons, Bud (Jenny), Fred and Randy Mathis and step-daughter, Ann Locust; 14 grandchildren; niece, Jennifer Thomas (Jake) and nephew, Larry Sutton (Amanda) and other family members and friends he loved.

Glen taught school at Waynesville Middle School, Whittier Elementary, and Stecoah High School.

In the early 70s, he served on the Swain County School Board. After this, he taught 25+ years at Robbinsville High School, where he won the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education. For many years, Glen enjoyed participating with square dance teams and ballroom dancing.

Also in his earlier years, he enjoyed drag racing and had a car involved in dirt track racing. Glen served as Boy Scout Leader for 10+ years, sponsored by the Bryson City Methodist Church. Two of the young men he worked with became Eagle Scouts.

After he retired, he owned and operated Bertha’s Flowers and Thomas Tax Service.

Glen was a member of the Alarka Baptist Church and for many years taught the Adult Sunday School Class.

The body will lie in state at Crisp Funeral Home on Sunday, Nov. 29 from 1 p.m. to 2 pm.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Fred Cochran Cemetery with Pastor Bo Brown officiation.

Pallbearers will be Fred Mathis, Bud Mathis, Chris Ledford, Roger Ledford, Doug Cochran, and Fred Cochran.

OBITUARY: Diane Glover

Diane Glover, born in Riverside, Calif. and a resident of Cherokee, N.C., passed away Sept. 7, 2020, surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of Margie Wilson Montgomery Grable and Roy Montgomery and adoptive parents Albert and Ethel Hurst Nelson.

Diane was a dedicated mother who treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as Grandma and Great Grandma. She was an avid reader, loved animals, genealogy, gemstones, sewing, baking, and traveling the world. She was the ultimate host and always made everyone feel welcome in her home. She was supportive and encouraging and always sacrificed her needs for the good of the family. She will be remembered for her great sense of humor, altruism, strength and for always making time for her friends and family.

She is survived by six children, Deborah Grohosky (Fred) of Norristown, Pa., Jim Glover of Asheville, Shane Glover (Kathy) of Malibar, Fla., Renè Glover (Evelyn) of Loganville, Ga., Rick Glover of Boulder, Colo., and Kelly Queen (Joel) of Whittier; 16 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; two sisters, Kathy McAllister of Norwalk, Calif., and Sue Harvey of Bend, Ore.; and one special feline princess, Lily.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hiram Paul Glover, two children, Deanah Cleere (Tom) of Hampstead, and Johnny Glover of Tuscon, Ariz.; and two sisters, Jan “Bunny” Maddox of Topack, Ariz. and Linda Lee Cross of Chino, Calif..

We will always love you and carry your memory in our hearts.

OBITUARY: Ernestine Roberta “Rose” Hornbuckle

The family of  Ernestine Roberta “Rose” Hornbuckle, 27, of Cherokee is grieved to announce her passing on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020. Rose is preceded in death by her son, Percival Mika Allison and her brother, Charles CJ Hornbuckle. 

Rose is survived by her parents, Charles A. Hornbuckle and Nannie Taylor. Carrying on her memory are her children, Ernest Locust, CeeJay Hornbuckle, Hezikiah Allison, and Rauzlyn Allison; as well as her sister, Victoria “Vicki” Simon. In addition, she leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. 

Her family will remember the way she always made sure to give everyone a hug and tell them that she loved them before she left from anywhere. Rose loved to draw, her favorite medium being pencils. She will be remembered for her appetite for food and life. A consummate lover of chocolate, she would eat anything chocolate and would follow it with an ice cold Coke. Rose was always on the go and never stayed in one place to long. She enjoyed staying on the move. She would always check to make sure her mom and dad were taken care of and doing ok. Rose liked helping her mom write in Syllabary. Her favorite song was her mom singing “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” in Cherokee. Rose loved to hear her mom sing to her in Cherokee. 

The family will have a visitation for Ernestine Roberta “Rose” Hornbuckle on Monday, Dec. 7 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Long House Funeral Home. Funeral services for Rose will be on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m.

Rose will be interred in private at the New CJ Hornbuckle Cemetery following the service. Pallbearers will be Taylor Wolf, Jodi Wolf, Nick Wolf, Richard Driver, Jessie Sneed, and Malaciah Taylor. 

If you plan to attend, please be aware that face masks are required. There will be a limit of no more than 50 people in the Chapel at any time. We will have a hand sanitizing station set up at the entrance. Please practice social distancing. OBITUARY: Ollie Littlejohn Bigwitch

The family of Ollie Littlejohn Bigwitch are grieved to announce her passing on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2020. Ollie Littlejohn Bigwitch, 85, was from the Wolftown Community of Cherokee. She is preceded in death by her parents, Isaac and Eliza Jane Littlejohn; as well as her sons, Phillip Mitchell, Freeman and Andrew Littlejohn. She is also preceded by her grandkids, Leshea and Matthew Littlejohn; and her great grandson, Collin Tramper. 

Ollie is survived by her husband, Jim Bigwitch; her daughters, Joyce (Bob) Taylor  and Mary (Jonah) Wolfe. In addition, she leaves behind her grandkids that she loved very much: Curt, Blaine, Shannon, Ginger, Sharron, Phillip, Kenny, and Bimbo.  She was also the proud grandmother of 21 great grandkids, and 12 great-great grandkids. Ollie also is survived by her special friends: Terri and Pam, and Mary Smith. 

Ollie grew up making baskets. In her younger days, she made white oak baskets but as she got older and throughout her adult years she was a renowned honeysuckle basket maker. She was a fluent speaker of the Cherokee Language and was valued for all her knowledge. Every spring, Ollie would go up on the mountains with family and pick greens, ramps and harvest what she could. Ollie will be remembered for how she loved to feed people and would open her kitchen up to anyone. She didn’t want to see anyone go hungry and would feed people as often as they was hungry. Ollie enjoyed watching the squirrels in her yard along with the hummingbirds that flew about. She loved to go ride around and loaf. Ollie believed Saturdays were meant for hitting up yard sales. She was always on the go, she’d do whatever she could, whenever she could. Even after working a long shift as a housekeeper, when she got home you would often see her and Jim driving on down the road. Ollie loved her family most of all. She took part in raising most of her grandbabies and made sure to tell her family that she loved them every time she saw them. Ollie Bigwitch will be greatly missed by her family, her friends and her community. 

The family will have visitation for Ollie Littlejohn Bigwitch on Friday, Dec. 11 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at which time Pastor Tim Melton will begin her Funeral Service. Ollie will be interred beside her sons at the Bigwitch Cemetery on Dave Cucumber Rd. Pallbearers will be among family and friends.

OBITUARY: Donovan Rickell Underwood

Donovan Rickell Underwood, 48 of Sylva, passed away Friday, Dec. 11, 2020 at Mission Hospital in Asheville.

A native of Graham County, he was the son of the late Ronnie Underwood, of Robbinsville, and Martha Brown, of Murphy.

He is survived by his companion Brandy Brewer of Sylva; daughter, Triniti Underwood of Sylva; daughter, Jacey Underwood of Robbinsville; sister, Laurie Underwood of Murphy; niece, Kiara Taylor of Murphy; nephew, Austin Rattler of Sylva; brothers, Ronnie Underwood Jr. and Billy Underwood, both of Robbinsville, and brother Corey Underwood of Andrews.  

Donovan was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and was a friend to many throughout his life.  He loved his family very much and was always someone willing to help a friend in need.  

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 1p.m. at 133 Cornsilk Branch Rd, Robbinsville with the Reverend Henry Ethridge Jr. officiating.  Pallbearers are Charlie Garland, Jordan Garland, Chris Blount, Bo Brewer, Corey Underwood, and Micah Boughman. 

Face coverings and social distancing are required by those in attendance at the graveside service.

OBITUARY: Steve A. Teesateskie

Steve Allen Teesateskie, 57, of the Big Cove Community in Cherokee passed away on Monday, Dec. 14, 2020.  Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Jeanette Teesateskie of the Snowbird Community as well as one brother, Pat Teesateskie. 

Steve is survived by his wife of 31 years, Donna Teesateskie; as well as his children, Stevie (Allyson) Teesateskie, Bill (Lena) Driver, Brian (Melody) Driver, Philenia (Dustin) Walkingstick, and Sammi Driver; along with 10 grandchildren: Kendall, Deeb, Lukie, Bronson, Hayden, Grayson, Josilynn, Payton, Yan, and Neveah. In addition, he leaves behind his brother, Ronnie (Sandra) Teesateskie of the Snowbird Community; sisters, Norma Jean (Late Eddie Smith), Donna Sue (Lonnie), Barbara (Late Lex Owle), Christine (Steve), and Blanche. Steve leaves behind also a special nephew, Tommy (Sarah); as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. 

At an early age, Steve was a logger with his dad. Prior to his passing, he was a groundskeeper at the Casino. He and his wife, Donna, enjoyed spending time together, especially elk watching. Steve loved NASCAR and was a fan of Rusty Wallace and Chase Elliott. He was a huge Cherokee Braves Fan. He also loved watching WWE and Kansas City Chiefs football. Steve was a handyman and would help out anyone. He loved being outdoors and being with his kids, grandkids and family. They were his pride and joy. Steve will be missed by many. He was a funny, smarty, big hearted guy with a great sense of humor. You would always find him laughing and cracking a joke. 

The family will have a Visitation for Steve Allen Teesateskie at Long House Funeral Home on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2020 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at which time the funeral service will begin. Matthew Tooni, David Smoker and  Brother Lane Smoker will reside over services. At 2 p.m. , Steve will be escorted by the Brothers In The Wind for one final ride to his final resting place at Lucy Driver Cemetery in the BigCove Community. Pallbearers will be Bug, Brent, Pat, and amongst family and friends.

OBITUARY: Deanna Rai Smith

The family of Deanna Rai Smith, 39, of the Birdtown Community, is saddened to announce her passing on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2020.

She is preceded in death by her father, Gary Dean “Boots” Smith; brother, Kevin Smith; Michael Jumper, her oldest “Dudeman’s” father; her maternal grandmother Emily Conseen McCoy and Tom McCoy; and several aunts and uncles.

Deanna is survived by her mother, Mary McCoy; brother, Roger McCoy; granddaughter, Amelia Ruth; her three loves, Taelon “Dude” Jumper (Kara), and Meli and Levi Winstead. She also leaves behind their father, Mark Winstead, and grandmother, Mary Ann Winstead, another blessing in their lives.

Deanna will be remembered not for her faults, but for her loving, funny, charismatic, loyal, telling it straight forward ways.

She was honest and would tell you straight forward she was an addict. She never meant to leave her kids or her mother behind, but thanks to a few high points along her journey they had the opportunity to know their mother and daughter and love and cherish the beautiful soul that she was.

The family will have a graveside service for Deanna at her final resting place at the Birdtown Cemetery on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 1 pm. Dewayne “Bear” Lambert will preside over services. Pallbearers will be amongst family.

OBITUARY: James Edward “Pete” Walkingstick

April 12, 1957 – Dec. 17, 2020

The family of James Edward “Pete” Walkingstick, 63, of Cherokee, is grieved to announce that he unexpectedly went to his heavenly home on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2020. 

Born April 12, 1957, Pete is preceded in death by his late parents, James Raymond and Geneva (Thompson) Walkingstick, and one brother, Richard Walkingstick.

He is survived by one brother, Jack Walkingstick (Mildred) of Cherokee; children,  Chris Walkingstick of Cherokee, Emily “Sissy” (Jonah) Bird of Snowbird, Janielle (Geoffrey) Wells of Murphy, and Crystal “Punk” Walkingstick of Snowbird; along with one nephew, Nathan Walkingstick of Tennessee. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Jennifer (Jonah) Carey of Cherokee, Dorian (Ashley) Walkingstick of Cherokee, Alex Bird of Snowbird, Ryen Bird of Snowbird, Tyra Bird of Snowbird, Jennifer (Eric) Spalding of Murphy, and Stephanie (Johnny) McCollum of Murphy; and great-grandchildren: Shania Woodall and Payden Carey of Cherokee, Easton Spalding of Murphy, and Keilan Bird of Snowbird. In addition, he is survived by many aunts, two uncles, and numerous cousins all of Cherokee; as well as his beloved dogs, Buddy, Sampson, and Ellie.

Pete enjoyed many things in life, but he enjoyed beading the most. He could be found most Saturdays watching a Norte Dame football game as he was a diehard Notre Dame fan. In Pete’s pastime, his passions were coaching football, wrestling, and field events in track. He was also an avid bodybuilder. He was most known for his one-of-a-kind laugh that could be heard anywhere if he were around, and his smile. Pete always wore the biggest of smiles on his faces, and if you ever seen that smile it was one you would never forget. Also, Pete was a man with one of the biggest hearts. He will be loved, missed, and cherished by many but his memory and legacy live on through his remaining family.

The family will have a visitation for James Edward “Pete” Walkingstick on Monday, Dec. 21 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at Long House Funeral Home. There will be a 1 p.m. Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Thompson Family Cemetery off of Booger Branch Rd. Pallbearers will be among Bruce Toineeta, Will Tushka, Mike Thompson, Hayes Reed, Tosh Welch, and Adrian “Bubba” Aguilera.

Beth Ann Owle, 45, of Cherokee, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021. Beth is preceded in death by her brother, Greg Owle. 

Beth is survived by her parents, Clifton and Patricia Owle; as well as her children, Aisha L. Owle, Brodie M. Owle, and Shilo Y. Owle. In addition, she leaves behind her sisters, Tara McCoy and Leigh Owle, as well as special nieces and nephews, Ayianna West and Philip West. 

Beth’s family will remember her as an artist who loved to draw in pencil and chalk. She was witty and known for never meeting a stranger. Beth was lovingly known as “Beth Crocker” by her family and friends. She made the most amazing pies with her specialty being miniature tin pies. In addition to being a wonderful baker, Beth loved animals. So much so that, she persuaded her daughter’s dog, Legacy, to love her cuddles and petting more than her mom Aisha’s.  Beth will be remembered as beautiful by her children and family that loved her so much. 

The family will have a visitation service for Beth Ann Owle on Wednesday, Jan. 6 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Long House Funeral Home. Beth will then be transported to Birdtown Cemetery for a graveside Funeral Service. Pallbearers will be: Philip West, Toby McCoy, Jayan Swimmer, Peyton Parker, Jake Welch and Calvin “Bugg” James.

We understand the need to console family at this time of loss, but please refrain from close contact, such as hugs and standing extremely close to individuals,  to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community. OBITUARY: Annette Faye (Owle) Fish

Annette Faye (Owle) Fish, 79, of the Cherokee Community, passed away unexpectedly following a period of declining health.  

Annette was the daughter of the late Lloyd Solomon Owle and Betty Mae (Bradley) Owle and was a member of Bethabara Baptist Church.  She was the loving wife to Curtis Fish of the home.  

Annette was a homemaker who loved baby sitting her grandchildren and loved to visit family and friends. She enjoyed tending her plants and garden, And, she loved attending her children’s, grandchildren’s, and great grand-children’s ball games, events, and ceremonies. Annette enjoyed watching OU Football with her husband Curtis.  Cooking and traveling with family were some of her most treasured memories.  Annette will be missed in so many lives. 

Annette was predeceased by sons, Joe Curtis Fish and Barry Curtis Fish; daughter, Rose Fish Long; brothers, Henry Owle and Robert Owle; and one sister, Jesse Dugan.

Along with her husband Curtis, Annette is survived by her daughter, Beatrice May Locust; brothers, Freeman Owle, Dewey Owle, Lloyd Carl Owle, and Frank Bradley; sisters, Peggy Owle Wolfe, Ruby Crowe, and Catherine Owle; five grandchildren, Miranda Long Stamper, Michelle Long, Madison Long, Crystal Davis, and Luke Locust; and eight great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service is planned for Tuesday, Jan. 12 in the Chapel of Long House Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. with a Memorial Service being officiated by Pastor Greg Morgan of Rocksprings Baptist Church.

We ask that all who attend to be courteous and please sanitize hands, wear masks, refrain from contact of others and practice safe distancing.  Please be aware that we will monitor the number that  people and my find it necessary to reduce the population when needed. God Bless you all.

Donald (Donnie) Walker, 67, of Bryson City, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Jan. 9, 2021. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late George William and Leois Evans Walker

Donnie is survived by his wife of 38 years, Darlene Walker; one daughter, Kelcye Michelle Walker; granddaughter, Anneleise Nicole Walker; a twin brother, Ronnie Walker (Susan); brothers, Joe Walker (Jessie Mae), Tommy Walker (Lois), Johnny Walker (Cookie), and Charlie Walker (Kattie); a special niece, Lindsay Edwards, and special nephew, Chumper Walker, and many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13 at Holly Springs Cemetery #2 on Shepherds Creek. Pastor Jeff Helpman will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Chumper Walker, Matt Edwards, Marvin Oliver, Jason Walker, Charles Walker, and Taliquo Walker.

OBITUARY: Angelica “Angie” Conseen

Angelica “Angie” Conseen, 67, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2020.

Angie will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Donald Conseen; her daughter, Donica Conseen; her sister, Anna Aragon; and many close family friends.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Francisco Aragon and Gregorio Aragon Jr, and her parents, Cesaria and Gregorio Aragon.

Angie was an alumni of the University of New Mexico. She helped her husband run a successful business for 42 years. She loved to read, travel, was a collector of Native American arts and crafts, and most importantly a loving mom, wife, and friend.

A celebration of life will be planned by the family when deemed safe.

OBITUARY: Jessica “Jet” Calhoun

Jessica Calhoun, 29, of Cherokee, passed away tragically on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2021 along with her young daughter, Ah-Yo-Ka Calhoun, 5, also of Cherokee. Known by family and friends as Jet, Jessica was preceded in death by her grandmother, Josephine Kalonaheskie.

Jessica leaves behind her other three children, Jallen Calhoun, Atalina Calhoun, and Elvis Calhoun, all of Cherokee. In addition, she is survived by her mother, Myra Calhoun; her brothers, Jarette (Dawneena) Calhoun and Joshua Calhoun; her nieces, Elizabeth Ann Calhoun and Maggie Suella Calhoun; and her nephews: Robbert Nathaniel Calhoun, Sebastian Cruz, and Ayden Gerald Calhoun.

Jet was a full-time mommy and loved her babies above all else. She would do anything to protect her babies, her brothers or anyone she seen as family. She was a one-of-a-kind woman. She would hate and love you at the same time.  She would fight with you and then give you hugs. Jet loved her many animals but she mostly has black cats which were her favorite. Jet had one special friend, Leticia Cruz “Beaver”, and one cousin she was very close to, Tamera Kalonaheskie.

The family will be having visitation for Jessica and Ah-Yo-Ka Calhoun on Tuesday, Jan. 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Long House Funeral Home. Funeral Service will follow at 3 p.m. with Pastor Dan Conseen officiating. Jessica and Ah-Yo-Ka will then be taken to their final resting place at Littlejohn Family Cemetery on Katie Littlejohn Road for interment. Pallbearers will be Jarette Calhoun, Stanley Mahan, Damian Kalonaheskie, Will West, Daniel Jordan and other family members and friends.

Ah-Yo-Ka Calhoun, 5, of Cherokee, passed away tragically on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2021 along with her mother, Jessica “Jet” Calhoun, also of Cherokee. Known by the name she loved to call herself, Yoki Bear is preceded in death by her great grandmother, Josephine Kalonaheskie. 

Yoki Bear leaves behind her brother, Elvis Calhoun; her sisters, Jallen Calhoun and Ataliana Calhoun, all of Cherokee. In addition, she is survived by her grandmother, Myra Calhoun; her aunt, Deana Davis that she called her Dean Dean; and her uncles, Jarette (Dawnenna) Calhoun that she knew as Waldo and Aunt Nini, and Joshua Calhoun. 

Yoki enjoyed fighting with her sisters and brothers. She loved collecting Teddy Bears. Yoki was known to occasionally steal her Pop’s Oklahoma Sooners jackets, shirts and hats. Yoki Bear was one baby that would make sure someone was good, and liked to make people feel better. She was a beautiful baby girl that had lots of love to give out. 

The family will be having visitation for Ah-Yo-Ka and Jessica Calhoun on Tuesday, Jan. 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Long House Funeral Home. Funeral Service will follow at 3 p.m. with Pastor Dan Conseen officiating. OBITUARY: Janene Lynn Flying

Janene Lynn Fying, 42, of Cherokee, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2021 at Mission Hospitals Memorial Campus with her loving family near her side.  

Janene was the loving daughter to the late Fenton Byrd Flying of the Northern Cheyenne who made his home in Cherokee, and late mother, Dorothy Yvonne (Hornbuckle) Flying of Cherokee.  Janene was a Mormon and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Cherokee/Whittier and was a life-long Alabama Fan and UNC Fan…Roll Tide! Janene lived life to its fullest to say the least.  

Janene is survived by her children, Tristin Byrd Flying (Partner Madison Long) of Maggie Valley, Robert Rattler of Cherokee, and Dominick Lawrence Flying of Candler; sister, Cheyenne Autumn Flying (Partner Jennifer Bradley) of Cherokee; aunts, Lillian Littlejohn, Gracia Harrison, Phyllis Ashenfelter, Lynda Fortner, and Nancy Maney all of Cherokee; and family in Montana, Pauline Flying.  

Janene is preceded in death by brother, Fenton Stuart Flying

A visitation is planned for Janene on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2021 in the Chapel of Long House Funeral Home in Cherokee from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. followed by a Graveside Funeral Service soon after in the Hornbuckle Family Cemetery on Old Mormon Church Rd. in Cherokee with Bishop Kevin Cornelius and other Counselors officiating.  Pall Bearers will be among Tristin Flying, Dominick Flying, Josh Silva, Leo Pete, Tino Pete and Bobby Crowe.

OBITUARY: Candina McMillan Cabe

Candina McMillan Cabe, 42, of Whittier, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, Jan. 17, 2021. A native of Swain County and longtime resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of Doris Cook McMillan of Whittier and the late Wayne McMillan.

She is survived by her husband, Kevin Cabe; one son, Benjamin Brown of Whittier; one brother, Scott Duncan of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23 at Crisp Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. David K. Owle will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday at the Funeral Home.

Interment will be held immediately following the memorial service at Bumgarner Cemetery in Whittier.

OBITUARY: Verlyn Brown

Verlyn Brown, 63, of Snowbird, completed his circle of life on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2021. He is preceded in death by his father, Diamond Brown Sr.; and his brothers, Diamond Brown Jr. and Merlin Brown. 

Verlyn is survived by his mother, Frieda Brown; step mother, Gayle Brown; and sister, Sandy Brown. In addition, Verlyn is carried on by his daughters, Tasha Brown and Brandi Brown Mathis; special son-in-law, McKinley Davis whom Verlyn called “Mr. Mac”; along with his grandchildren, Wade Hamilton, Karma Mathis, Shaylee Underwood, and Haylee Brown. 

 It was no secret that Verlyn had a love and passion for hotrods. He loved spending his time riding his motorcycle and simply enjoying life to the fullest. You would often find him dancing to his favorite tunes. Verlyn  loved his work family and enjoyed goofing off with his special co-worker, Encie. He loved spending time with his daughters and grandchildren. Him and his brothers share some of the best memories that words could never say. 

Verlyn Brown will have his final motorcycle ride on Thursday, Jan. 21 leaving Long House Funeral Home in Cherokee at 10:30 a.m. and  going to the Buffalo Baptist Church in Snowbird where funeral services will begin at 12 p.m. A private interment will follow at the Brown Family Cemetery that will be open to only family. Pallbearers will be McKinley Davis, JR Sawyer, Tony Rattler, Russell Self, Eugene Wachacha, Eddie Chekelelee, Jeremy Holder and Scott Chekelelee. 

In lieu of flowers for Verlyn, his daughters ask that flowers be sent to his mother, Frieda Brown and include a treasured memory of her son for her to read.
